Library garden runner beans have replaced broad beans

The Westbury-on-Trym Library Group with help from SusWoT have planted a selection of runner beans to replace the broad beans. There are three varieties of bean which will be available for library users to pick this summer. The green runner beans, Moonlight and Firestorm, need to be regularly picked to encourage new growth so please help yourselves to a meal’s worth when visiting the library. Conversely Borlotti beans, with their distinctive red and white pods (illustrated below), are left unpicked until the end of the season when they are harvested and dried all together. Care must be taken to thoroughly cook Borlotti beans as, along with Red Kidney beans amongst others, they are toxic when raw.
