Stoke Lane Community Garden

To create a natural, recreational, community space for all to enjoy

The Stoke Lane Community Garden is a project to create a garden for the local community on a piece of unused ground behind the Stoke Lane shops, Westbury-on-Trym that is developed and maintained by the local community. This SusWot project is aimed at the local residents in the Stoke Lane/ Reedley Road/Abbey Road/Great Brockeridge area of Westbury on Trym and those who use the Stoke Lane shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs and visit friends and relatives in the area –  click here for a map.

Take a look at the gallery below showing the evolution of the garden.

The garden was created between autumn 2011 and spring 2012 and was officially opened on 9th June 2012 as part of the Get Growing Trail – see the report via Bristol Indepents. The aims in the design of the garden were:

  • Be accessible
  • Be restful / relaxing
  • Be wildlife friendly
  • Have seating
  • Contain productive, edible planting
  • Contain unusual planting
  • Provide year round interest
  • Be informal
  • Be sustainable (any features / furniture should be made from sustainable materials)
  • Provide flexible growing space
  • Consider the prevailing environmental factors (direction of sun and wind, lack of water on plot, legacy features e.g. concrete posts)
